Rahul Dravid Set to Retire from All forms of the Game

Former India captain Rahul Dravid will bring down the curtains on his illustrious career at a press conference in Bangalore on Friday. The media briefing will also be attended by BCCI president N Srinivasan, according to Cricinfo.

Dravid, who will be the first of India's seniormost cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, to announce his retirement had a poor series in Australia; but enjoyed a stellar run of form in 2011. He has already retired from one-day internationals and Twenty20 Internationals.

The 39-year-old was renowned for his strong technique, classical style of play, thriving under challenges and sustained concentration for long periods irrespective of the circumstances around him. Dravid turned back the years during India's horrendous tour of England in 2011, where he was the only Indian batsman to cope with the conditions and the opposition bowlers as he scored 461 runs, including three centuries in four Tests at an average of 76.83; when no other Indian batsman crossed the 275-run mark. But, like other Indian batsman, he also failed to get among the runs in Australia.

Dravid, will however, still be seen in action for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League; where he will succeed legendary Australian leg spinner Shane Warne as the franchise's captain.

Where previous generations of Indian batsmen struggled, Dravid made big runs in bowler-friendly conditions. The two innings which stand out are his 148 in the Leeds Test of 2002 and the twin knocks of 81 and 68 on a minefield of a wicket in Jamaica. Both helped India score landmark Test wins.
